About Australian Shepherd
Australian shepherd is true knight among other dog breeds. Thanks to his activity, mobility, working ability, talent for herding, sharpness, training ability, devotion and loyalty to his family and eagerness to please and work for his owner, is he excellent working dog and superb companion too. Australian shepherd is suitable dog for all kinds of dog sports; he is excellent companion for walking, trekking, jogging, cycling and horse riding. He is used as search and rescue dog, assistance or therapeutic dog too.
„Aussie“, as call this breed in the USA, country of his origin, want to be a valid member of his family, he want to participate on all family activities and life in cote without permanently contact with his people isn’t suitable for him. Three short walks aren’t enough for him and he need to be useful for his owner.
Australian shepherd is a well-balanced dog of medium size and bone. Preferred height at the withers for males is 20 - 23 inches (50,5 – 58,5 cm) and for females 18 – 21 inches (45,5 - 53,5 cm). Australian shepherd is attentive and animated, he is showing strength and stamina, combinated with unusual agility. His body is lightly longer than tall and his coat has moderate length and coarseness with coloring that offers variety and individuality in each specimen. The recognized coat colors are blue merle, red merle, solid black and solid red, all with or without white markings and/or tan (copper) points. An identifying characteristic is the natural or docked bobtail.
Australian shepherd is a dog with strong herding and guardian instincts. His nature should be well-balanced and friendly without displays of shyness, fear or aggression. He may be reserved with strangers but does not exhibit shyness.
